Panama’s Holy Ghost Orchid: The National Flower

Hello friends, every flower is different, with its own shapes and colors, but there are some that seem to hold a story at the center of their petals. Peristeria elata, known as Panama’s Holy Ghost orchid or dove orchid, is one of tropical America’s most distinctive orchids. At the center of its white flower, a structure can resemble a small dove with folded wings. In Panama, this remarkable plant also has a special place as the country’s national flower.

What is the Holy Ghost orchid?

The Holy Ghost orchid is an orchid species with the scientific name Peristeria elata, belonging to the family Orchidaceae. Its English common names refer to the dove-like shape visible inside the bloom; in Spanish, it is known as flor del Espíritu Santo.

Like many orchids, its beauty is connected to specialized botanical structures and relationships with pollinators. To explore more members of this fascinating plant family, read our guide to orchids and their diversity.

Characteristics of Peristeria elata

The plant develops pseudobulbs—swollen structures that store water and nutrients—and elongated leaves. A flower spike rises from the base and can carry several waxy blooms, usually white, with small yellowish or purplish details on some floral structures. The central part of the flower is what inspires the image of a dove.

Flowering can be impressive, but a young plant may need time to mature before it blooms. Plant age, growing conditions, and seasonal cycles all influence flowering. Photographs may also show slightly different tones because lighting and natural variation affect how the details appear.

Where does this orchid grow?

Peristeria elata is native to tropical America, and its range is not limited to Panama. Botanical records place it in parts of Central America and northern South America. In the wild, it grows in warm, humid environments associated with tropical forests. As with other orchids, local moisture, light, and air movement influence how it develops.

Its presence in several countries does not lessen its importance as a Panamanian symbol. National borders and botanical distributions do not always match. The species is part of a remarkably rich tropical flora adapted to specific environmental conditions.

Why is it Panama’s national flower?

Panama officially recognized the Holy Ghost orchid as its national flower through Law No. 46, dated November 21, 1980. Since then, Peristeria elata has served as a botanical emblem of the country and a reminder of the richness of its ecosystems.

The flower’s name also has a cultural dimension. The white structure visible at its center resembles a dove, a symbol associated with the Holy Spirit in Christian tradition. This visual resemblance explains the common name, although it is a cultural interpretation rather than a botanical classification.

Conservation: protecting a remarkable orchid

Wild orchids can be threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as by the removal of plants for trade. International trade in Peristeria elata is subject to strict controls under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Such rules help ensure that commercial demand does not endanger wild populations.

The best way to enjoy this orchid is to admire it without removing plants from nature. If you want to grow one, choose a legally propagated plant from a specialist nursery and ask about its origin. Avoid buying wild-collected specimens or plants offered without clear documentation. Conservation also means protecting the forests where these species live and supporting responsible botanical initiatives.

Basic care when grown by specialists

The Holy Ghost orchid is not suited to every windowsill. It needs warm conditions, good ambient humidity, air circulation, and an appropriate orchid medium. Provide bright, filtered light rather than harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Watering should maintain suitable moisture without leaving the roots constantly waterlogged.

  • Light: bright, indirect light; protect the plant from intense midday sun.
  • Humidity and airflow: aim for humid air with good circulation to help reduce fungal problems.
  • Watering: adjust frequency to temperature, airflow, and the growing medium; do not keep the plant saturated.
  • Growing medium: use an airy orchid mix and a container with drainage.
  • Source: buy only legally cultivated plants with traceable origins.

Exact needs vary with local climate and growing methods. Before acquiring this species, consult a nursery experienced with tropical orchids and make sure you can provide suitable conditions.

A flower that reflects Panama’s natural heritage

The Holy Ghost orchid brings together beauty, national identity, and environmental responsibility. Its delicate form has made it one of the region’s most recognizable orchids, while its status as the national flower highlights the importance of conserving tropical landscapes. Learning about Peristeria elata means understanding that an emblematic flower should be more than a picture: the ecosystems that sustain it deserve protection, too.
