Legend of Añañuca
Añañuca is a common name for several bulbous plants that flower in the arid and semi-arid regions of Chile, particularly the Norte Chico. Copiapó is in the Atacama Region, while the Quilimarí Valley is in the Coquimbo Region; these locations should not be described as belonging to the same region. A traditional legend offers a poetic explanation for its name through a tragic love story; this is not a verified etymology.
The common name ‘añañuca’ is used for several Chilean bulbous plants. One species associated with the name is Rhodolirium montanum (synonym Rhodophiala rhodolirion). This species is a perennial bulbous geophyte native to central Chile and parts of Argentina. Not every plant called añañuca, including the red flowers in the legend, necessarily belongs to this species. Some wild populations may face local conservation pressures linked to habitat loss. Below we will tell you the legend of the origin of this flower.

Legend of Añañuca
The legend tells of a young woman named Añañuca who lived in a northern Chilean village before independence. One day, a miner who was looking for the mine that would bring him fortune, stopped in the town and met the young woman. They fell in love, and the miner decided to put his plans aside and stay with her. They were very happy, until one night, the miner had a dream that revealed to him the place where the mine that he had searched for so long was located. The next morning, he decided to leave in search of the mine.

Heartbroken, the young woman waited and waited, but the miner never came. According to the legend, the miner disappeared into the vastness of the pampa. According to the tale, the young woman died of grief and was buried on a rainy day in the middle of the valley. The next day the sun came out and the valley was covered with red flowers that were named Añañuca in memory of the young woman.
